Women’s Work in the UAE

Free «Women's Work in the UAE» Essay Sample

Introduction

Women in the UAE have recently benefited from enacted laws that protect them against the flourishing traditions in the country. Notably, the region has recently experienced a rise of the number of women working in the corporate sector. Globalization has played a key role in this scenario with people all over the world advancing for emancipation of women in the UAE (Ehteshami, 2007). However, it is critical to mention the fact that some laws continue to discriminate women in Emirati. For instance, there is the Sharia law and Federal law that govern women’s work in UAE.

Data Analysis

According to International Federation for Human Rights (2010), women in the UAE have continually being discriminated when it comes to working. It stems from the fact that Sharia and Federal laws have limited them in terms of work. Additionally, women in the region are expected to stay at home and cater to their families. It means that they are considered as homemakers with men assuming the sole position of the breadwinner. Education also comes into play in this scenario with women being denied chances of advancing their education while men are considered to be well placed when they advance their education (Genov, 2011). However, with globalization taking root in all regions, there has been a significant change in some laws in UAE. Recently, slight improvements are evident in the region with 21 percent of women joining the labor force. Genov (2011) opines that measures have been taken to come up with cities that will allow women to work close to their homes. It is a step of allowing women to join the labor force and contribute to the development of the country’s economy (International Federation for Human Rights, 2010). Mohammed (2012) affirms the fact that more than 80 percent of women in the region work in the household as maids. Laws in the corporate world in UAE have significantly barred women from rising in rank, which has propelled many of them to open their private businesses. Until recent years,  a few women have been seen performing in the corporate sector although laws still limit their advancement in the career ladder. A small number of women work in industries in the region. The government in the country has recently passed laws citing women should work in the lingerie industry. This passage of the laws is an attempt to allowing more women to join the labor force, and it is projected that this will be followed by the perfume industry, as well (International Federation for Human Rights, 2010). Globalization has played a significant role in this progress considering that women in other countries of the world are allowed to compete equally with men. It is critical to mention that women have finally been allowed to drive cars in the region. Initially, they were forbidden to drive since there was a belief that women cannot perform the same tasks as men. Thus, this is a clear indication that the globalization has taken root in the country (Moore, 2011). Globalization has several impacts on the region. Firstly, it has facilitated the emancipation of women and provided them with opportunities to work alongside the men. Globalization has also led to the rise of independent women in the region who are entrepreneuers as compared to the past whereby all women were expected to be married and live under the Sharia law (Ehteshami, 2007). It can also be asserted that with globalization, the region will soon emerge as the one with super power economy considering the additional revenue that it will be able to raise from women’s participation in the economy (Genov, 2011).

Conclusion

Women’s work in UAE is a matter that has elicited extensive discussion because they were forbidden to work in industries. Women were expected to be homemakers until recently when laws have been reenacted to accommodate them in the labor force. Thus, this resulted into a slight increase of the number of women in the labor force with many of them taking up positions in industries and as entrepreneurs. My ethical opinion regarding this globalized issue is that it works for the benefit of women in the region. It is not justifiable for women to be limited in their potential because of their gender. It is commendable that women in the country can finally become independent and make their money. It will also facilitate them to further their education, which is critical for them to compete fairly with men in the future. The laws should be relaxed further in the future if the country is to emerge as an economy power house.
